Health Insurance in United Kingdom

Health insurance in United Kingdom has been the topic of debate for quite awhile now. Essentially, the National Health Service provides coverage to all citizens, though it is also somewhat controversial.

Many years ago, the National Health Service (NHS) covered all citizens of England and citizens of Wales. Today, NHS solely covers those residing within England. The NHS was erected in 1946, and the idea behind the NHS Act was to provide health care to all that needed it. The Department of Health strives to help the people within England, and it happens to be one of the largest governmental bodies within the world today (the NHS employs more than 1.3 million people). There are three basic levels of health insurance in United Kingdom to consider.

Those three levels include: the primary (general practice), secondary (district general hospital), and tertiary (teaching hospital). Each level tends to interact with the other ones, and care is provided by all levels. As far as drug distribution goes, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) decides whether or not drugs and other treatments should be disbursed by the NHS in England and in Wales. Aside from the NHS, private health care practices have begun to spring up all over England lately. These health care providers offer services and care that the government funded health care provider cannot. If you are looking for a type of private health care plan, be sure to review all of the policies and procedures prior to purchasing any one type. Some private plans are worthwhile, while some of them won’t cover you any more than the original NHS care plan would.

England is going through a sort of health care resurgence right now. While some citizens are more than happy with the government health care system, others demand better service. Of course, asking for better service means paying out of pocked for private health care. Then again, if a person cannot get the care that they need through public health care, the private system is more than appealing. Opting for private healthcare means finding various options that public health care cannot offer. Private health care systems include numerous plans, though the type of health care sought largely depends upon the demands and needs of the individual. As you can see, health insurance in United Kingdom is a difficult matter to comprehend.

As times change, many people will begin to demand better health care. While the government system works rather well in theory, it is not necessarily the best course of action for those that require specialized health care. As the years pass, the health care system within the UK may change drastically, or it may revert to its original government funded plan by kicking out the private sector. In short, only time will tell how this health care policy pans out.

Health insurance in United Kingdom used to be a matter of public health care. However, as the private health care sector moves in, more and more people are shunning that large government program.
